Our Moment Capturer (also known as photographer): Katie
For some reason, I’m convinced that if I leave my car air-con set to “internal air”... I could eventually suffocate. Therefore, my air-con will always be pulling in fresh, oxygen-filled air from outside and my passengers will always have more than enough air to breathe.
When I was studying for exams in university, I had to pack my room and table before I could concentrate on studying.
I have trouble reading books without my mind wandering. So I have only ever read 3 novels in my life apart from the ones in high school we all read as a class.
As a teenager, I was obsessed with The Beatles.
When I was about six, my sibling threw a slipper at me. I dodged just in time—only for it to smash the window behind me!
I had an obsession with ladybugs when I was younger.
I have lived in 15 different houses in my life.
One of my many dreams growing up was to be a professional ice-skater.
If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Brooke: A fruit smoothie.
Sheridan: Vegetable soup of some kind (but not minestrone… 🤮).
Jasmine: Can blue cheese be a meal? Steak! Vietnamese pho. Too hard to choose.
Katie: Chinese food, any kind really, must have prawns.
What's your favourite board game?
Brooke: Telestrations is definitely a favourite when we’re playing with the family. I also LOVE Balderdash!
Sheridan: Ticket to Ride!
Jasmine: I love Codenames!
Katie: I love playing Sequence.
You have to sing karaoke. What song do you pick?
Brooke: They’re are so many… but it’s definitely gonna be a Broadway tune!
Sheridan: Dancing Queen by ABBA.
Jasmine: Backstreet Boys or Disney songs!
Katie: Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey.
Favourite Season:
Brooke: Can I simply say “Hollywood Awards Season”?
Sheridan: Spring - usually decent washing weather. 😉
Jasmine: Autumn!! Love the beautiful colours of the leaves.
Katie: Spring, all the pretty flowers and the warmer weather.
What's the most unusual talent you have?
Brooke: I can tell you that it’s definitely NOT my sense of direction… I have a pretty good memory. Or a very selective memory. 😉 I remember movie plots and scenes remarkably well. Even films I watched as a kid, I can often remember certain scenes frame by frame. And it’s the same with life events. I will remember exact moments in life - where I was standing, what I was wearing, what was said, exactly what happened with precise detail. Meanwhile you ask me who the Prime Minister is, or if Collingwood won their match last week and I might need a few minutes before I can answer…
Sheridan: I have a knack for predicting where a movie or TV show is headed, especially in certain genres. My family thought it was a fun gimmick at first, but now they avoid asking for my thoughts—apparently, I spoil the story without meaning to, haha!
Jasmine: I’m actually really stumped by this question other than I used to be able to memorise TONS of phone numbers until we moved to using smartphones. Haha.
Katie: I can type numbers quite fast. Useless talent now, but handy when I worked in an office.
If you could learn one new personal skill, what would it be?
Brooke: I have always wanted to learn to tap dance and waltz.
Sheridan: Graphic design so I could create professional-looking book covers for my novels.
Jasmine: Gosh, this is hard. I have so many things I want to learn. Can it be two things? Watercolour painting and piano!
Katie: I would love to learn to paint, then I would turn some of my photos into paintings.
Who is someone you’d love to meet?
Brooke: I would LOVE to meet Ron Howard! His masterclass on directing completely transformed my understanding for filmmaking back in 2021.
Sheridan: I’d physically love to “meet” my first editor, Jeanette. She lives in the USA and taught me so much about writing.
Jasmine: I would love to meet Chris Hemsworth only because BROOKE got to see him in Gold Coast and I didn’t when I was there.
Katie: I would love to meet Ken Duncan, his photographs are amazing!!
What was your best subject at school?
Brooke: Would you believe Drama and Creative Writing? Shocking, I know. I’m sure everyone expected Science and Maths.
Sheridan: Drama and English Literature were neck-and-neck for me.
Jasmine: Math. Typical Asian kid. 😂
Katie: Maths… it’s come in so handy for my love of photography!!!?
What's the most adventurous thing you've ever done?
Brooke: You’re asking someone who enjoys a cup of herbal tea and a 9pm bedtime this question… so really not much! I went to the midnight session of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I felt pretty adventurous.
Sheridan: Crossing a metre-long, 40cm wide dirt pathway/bridge on a mountain in Bali around 10pm with only fireflies to light the path.
Jasmine: Leaving my home country, Singapore, to come here to study and deciding to stay on!
Katie: Standing on rocks in raging waters for photos.
Sunrise or sunset?
Brooke: Sunrise all the way!
Sheridan: Sunset.
Jasmine: Sunset. I have TONS of photos of it!
Katie: Sunset.
Brooke: I love the power of story-telling. I think it’s so cool that even Jesus would constantly use stories and parables when teaching! And I love the opportunity we have as a Communications Team to tell the story of Jesus and the story of Breakthrough to our community. Everything I do with our team comes back to those stories.
Sheridan: I value the friendships and camaraderie I’ve developed with my Comms Team buddies, and I also appreciate the opportunity to use my writing and editing skills within the church. Communicating is more than reels on social media. Our heart is to share Jesus’ love intentionally through our words and images.
Jasmine: I love so many things honestly! Surely I'm not being biased when I say this is the best team. 😉 It's just so awesome that with the advancement in technology, we are now blessed with so many different mediums to share Jesus with others and reach different age groups that way. It helps others feel like they “know” the culture of Breakthrough before they visit. Personally, I love capturing moments during the service. My absolute favourite is when I stop to film videos in the middle of praise and worship sessions and watch everyone just fully in awe of God and thanking Jesus in their own way.
Katie: It’s something I am so passionate about and it’s giving me opportunities to talk to people when I am usually a little shy.
Brooke: I grew up in church. I’ve always believed in God, loved God, and wanted to live a life that pleased God. But when I was 17, I really “discovered God” for myself. I was having to make decisions regarding my future surrounding what and where I’d study. And I found myself wondering what I was put on this earth for, and if I really did have a purpose.
I knew I believed in God… but did I believe in God “enough” to actually make life choices based on Him? Was I willing to go down a path which wasn’t advised by the experts in my field, simply because I had a trust and faith in this God and what He’d put on my heart?
It wasn’t a small decision to make. And I wasn’t about to make it lightly.
I spent a few weeks really seeking God. I did everything I could to learn more about God and grow closer to Him during that time. And then I prayed that if this thing in my heart was God, then He would have someone I respected come to me and tell me I was hearing God.
Keep in mind… NOBODY knew the journey I was on and no one knew the questions I was asking.
Two weeks later, someone I respected came up to me and said, “You know, I get this feeling you’ve got something on your heart and you’re not sure if it’s you or God, but I just feel to tell you it is God…”
I started crying uncontrollably.
In that moment, I knew with everything in me that God was real and He loved me enough to meet me right where I was at.
Do I have all the answers about God? Nope.
But I know deep in my heart I was created by God for a purpose, and He’s right beside me every step of the way.
Sheridan: I’ve known Jesus since childhood, but it wasn’t until Year 7 I decided He was “it” for me.
Church became my safe place, and singing praises to God whenever I could became my anchor. At home, things were volatile—my dad was a backslidden Christian and difficult to live with. School wasn’t much better. I endured relentless bullying, and between that and the tension at home, anxiety became a constant battle.
By God’s grace, I made it through, and when I was 16, my dad recommitted his life to Jesus. Through it all, God protected my heart—it’s a miracle it didn’t grow calloused.
Jasmine: My relationship with God truly transformed when I moved to Australia for university. Growing up in a traditional church in Singapore, I never quite had a personal encounter with the Holy Spirit. I believed in Him, but He felt distant, more like someone out there than someone I could truly know. Moving to a new country and searching for my identity as a young adult, I was blessed to connect with other Christians and mentors who shared how deeply real God was to them. Through their stories and encouragement, I began to grasp the depth of God's grace and the personal relationship He wants with us. I’m incredibly thankful they encouraged me to step out in faith and seek Him. I’m continually amazed by how God speaks to me and moves in both my life and the lives of others. Though I’m still learning and growing every day, He has proven Himself faithful through many seasons of life.
Katie: Jesus has always been a part of my life growing up because of my parents, but it was only a few years ago I was reading Joseph Prince’s book called Grace Revolution and I learnt about the Grace of God and wow!!!
