How can I confront fear amidst global uncertainties?

Before we tackle this important question, we need to recognise that fear is never healthy. Mark 5:36 is a key verse which deals with fear. When Jairus received the news that his daughter was dead, Jesus said, “Stop fearing, only be believing”.

If we’re overcome by fear, we can’t be in faith, and when we’re strong in faith, we can’t be in fear. Fear and faith cannot coexist.

When I first respond to world events with fear, here’s what I do:

  1. I do not aim at “not fearing”. Instead, I focus on “being in faith”. It’s not possible to just remove fear. I must push it out by filling my heart with faith.

  1. I guard my heart. If faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10), we need to know fear also comes by feeding our heart on the wrong things. I intentionally limit the news I watch and am particular to guard against any news shared out of fear or panic.

  1. I strengthen my heart by filling it with God’s word. I meditate on Scripture, especially passages which remind me God is in control. Verses emphasising how He is full of love and mercy. We need to remember that “perfect love drives out our fear of God’s eternal punishment” (1 John 4:17).

Recently, I’ve meditated on the revelation of Jesus in the Book of Revelation, chapter one, which shows Jesus in all of His glory. Majestic and powerful. King of all the earth.

Fill your heart and mind with the revelation of Jesus, and fear will flee.
